Retrofitting devices have existed for almost two decades now, diesel particulate filter (DPF) technology being the dominant technology in retrofitting for some years. Today, however the main concern is the NOx emissions. The annual threshold values set for nitrogen dioxides (NO2) (40 μg/m3) in the EU directive on ambient air quality have been exceeded in many busy roadside areas in large cities over several years; therefore, actions to reduce NOx are now being implemented in many cities and countries.

For NOx reduction, SCR technology has been successfully used in OE applications, and the same technology has also proven to be efficient and reliable in retrofitting. SCR combined with DPF is the most efficient combination in the retrofitting market, significantly reducing both PM and NOx, and markedly improving air quality in the short term.
