Proventia to take part in a project aimed at reducing emissions from bus traffic in Helsinki and surrounding areas
Proventia has signed up for a three-year trial that aims to significantly cut emissions in Helsinki and the surrounding areas with the help of next generation biofuels. The project, which is jointly coordinated by Helsinki City Transport (HKL), Helsinki Metropolitan Area Council (YTV), Neste Oil and Proventia, aims to fuel around half of the buses operating in Helsinki and the surrounding areas with Neste Oil's new NexBTL biodiesel by 2010.
Proventia supplies around 50 busses with continuous regenerative pDPF particulate filters. The goal is to demonstrate the functioning of the filters with NexBTL biodiesel. The trial will begin with a 30 % NexBTL solution, but the aim is to test the filters with 100% biodiesel as well. Even without the filter, NexBTL produces significantly less particulate and nitrogen oxide emissions than traditional diesel.
With this biofuel trial, Helsinki City Transport and Helsinki Metropolitan Area Council are hoping to lead the way to environmentally sustainable public transport in Finland. The project also supports the Helsinki Metropolitan Area Climate Strategy, which aims, amongst other endeavours, at cutting traffic-related greenhouse gas emissions by one fifth by 2030.
