Why AdBlue mixers are the key players in NRMM EATS

For us Finns, the dramatic 1-0 victory against Denmark in the UEFA Euro 2020 tournament was a pure, almost unbelievable surprise. But I will tell you another clean and somewhat surprising thing: air quality immediately after the exhaust pipe can be better than the air we inhale in big cities! Today’s modern combustion engines are indeed cleaner than most of us believe.

Practice makes perfect on playing fields, but what has made engines cleaner, besides the overall development in engine technology? Firstly, developments in the evaluation procedures of vehicles and machines. Secondly, huge improvements in fuels, including the transition from fossil fuels to renewable fuels and new lubricants.

Giant steps are taken especially in the field of Exhaust After Treatment Systems (EATS). Not only in automotive industry, but also in off-road vehicles and machines, such as material handling, agriculture, and construction machines – all these widely described as Non-Road Mobile Machinery (NRMM). Although hybridization and renewable fuels are becoming more and more common, EATS are still needed in both cases.

Proventia AdBlue mixer is number 10 in your team

Typical local air pollutants are particulate matters (PM), carbon monoxide (CO), and nitrogen oxides (NOx). All these are heavily controlled by regulators, and technologies have significantly developed during the last decade.

Catalysts and filters are taking care of particles and CO. For removing NOx from exhaust gas, the technology is more complicated. You need to have a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system to convert NOx to nitrogen and water vapor. And this conversion requires an additive called AdBlue®.

How to mix this additive to exhaust gas so that the SCR system works efficiently? AdBlue mixers are in a key role here! At Proventia, we have spent endless hours researching and developing game changing AdBlue mixers. And why?

Early on, when developing EATS for the European Stage 3B emission standard, it soon became clear that if we ever want these SCR systems to operate in real life the way they should, we need to look beyond a merely decent mixer and develop a top-notch AdBlue mixer.

Ensure maximum performance in all fields and conditions

In NRMM, demands for the mixers are often higher than in the automotive sector. Efficiency requirements, and harsh and widely changing operational conditions cause several specific challenges. How to ensure performance in freezing winter conditions in wild Nordic forests and in a hot Middle Eastern summer with the same design?

And how to be ready from a cold start and low gas flow to rapid transient conditions with sudden full loads directly from idling conditions? And all these challenges must be tackled in an extremely compact area with a minimal mixing volume.

Continuous improvements are required in developing mixers and complete EATS together with engine OEMs. Better and better, with less impact on fuel economy and costs.

True winners keep pushing the limits

Our designers are really enjoying these challenges, and they keep pushing the limits and looking for new ideas and solutions to these challenges. Robust mixers with optimal balance between performance and volume, providing the customer with modularity and tailoring possibilities for their variable applications.

When talking about AdBlue mixers, you cannot avoid AdBlue injectors. There is a variety of AdBlue injectors and injected droplet characteristics available.

We have been working with most of the common injectors, but also the most challenging ones. Consequently, our mixers are ready for the game with most of the common injectors and other boundary conditions, as well.

How does our mixer, the Key Player in our EATS, work? Like in any soccer game, transitions and correct flow types are important.

We make exhaust gas and AdBlue swirl and dribble together. And guide and coach the injected AdBlue droplets to evaporate and jump to active ammonia form in a short distance from the injector. Then, the mixer assures that all active components are utilized for their purposes, to clean NOx emissions.

A top-notch mixer is the coach’s most reliable player

A coach’s most reliable player in the field is experienced, efficient, and robust, always delivering the best performance. Like a top-notch mixer.

Humble leader by nature – someone who makes other players perform well and shine. And that’s what our mixers do. They improve the overall SCR performance - in demanding NRMM applications for more than a decade already, and at the highest league level.

The experience and track record ensure that most of the technical challenges one can expect have been seen, and more importantly, solved! How to avoid wall wetting and blocking? And how to utilize all available cubic millimeters for mixing to achieve optimal dosing strategies?

In Proventia’s mixers, the secret of our offering lies in our patented innovations to utilize a swirling curve and reactants. In our mixers, we enhance the speed and distance for mixing.

Getting this Key Player to your team is a lot easier than in the soccer world. They are available for anyone who needs them. Contact us and let us help you score in your next game.
