Rising Interest in Emission Class Upgrades in Heavy Machinery
Changes in the operating environment, rising costs, and stricter emission requirements for contracts are all happening at the same time. Contractors and machine owners are increasingly choosing to extend the lifespan of their heavy equipment rather than investing in new machines.

With Proventia’s retrofit systems, it’s possible to meet the same emission standards as with the new machinery. Ilkka Kuusiniva, Manager of Proventia’s retrofit products, notes that interest in the NOxBUSTER® retrofit system has grown significantly in recent years. Construction machine owners have become more cost-conscious and are upgrading their equipment to higher emission classes during refurbishment projects.
– Public sector organizations and large companies now require subcontractors to use equipment that complies with increasingly stringent emission regulations. Proventia’s NOxBUSTER® is an effective solution for upgrading a machine’s emission class to Stage V, says Ilkka Kuusiniva.
New Life for CAT® Machine
Our recent success story highlights the refurbishment of an earthmoving machine carried out in collaboration with Avesco Oy, the Caterpillar importer in Finland. Avesco is responsible for the import and sale of Cat machines in Finland, as well as lifecycle services, including spare parts sales and maintenance.
An earthmoving company contacted both Avesco and Proventia regarding the refurbishment and upgrade of the emission class of a Cat330D machine. The customer acquired the machine and carried out the routine refurbishment, while Avesco performed Caterpillar’s RePower engine overhauling and hydraulic repairs. During the same process, Avesco installed Proventia’s NOxBUSTER® emission control system, upgrading the machine’s emission class from Stage III B to Stage V. The system has delivered an average 93% reduction in nitrogen oxides (NOX) and has operated reliably since commissioning.
– We value our collaboration with Avesco. The company carefully chooses its collaboration partners. As a significant importer, they have their own solutions as well, but they also include Proventia’s quality products to complement their offering when needed, Kuusiniva adds.
Cost-Effective Upgrade to a Higher Emission Class
Proventia has over 30 years of experience in emission control systems. The story of the NOxBUSTER® system began back in 2011. Initially deployed in city buses across Europe, the system is now also used in heavy equipment, including excavators, wheel loaders, graders, and mining equipment. NOxBUSTER® is compatible with most engines in the 100–400 kW power range.
– NOxBUSTER® is adaptable to various machine makes and models. Its core features are designed based on engine displacement. It is built for easy and flexible integration across various equipment types. NOxBUSTER® is a highly scalable system, Kuusiniva explains.
For those considering equipment upgrades or planning to maintain resale value, emission-class upgrades offer a cost-effective alternative to purchasing new equipment, often at just a tenth of the price.
